According to the TSSB Guidelines for the Development, Recognition and Usage of Skill Standards, recognized skill standards are required to be reviewed and updated every three to five years.  By that time (or even sooner, depending upon the occupation), the actual work may not have changed but the equipment, resources, or tools used to complete it most likely have.  In some occupations, the actual work has changed dramatically, requiring a new development process to determine the broad work responsibilities, key activities, conditions, and other elements of the skill standards. Thus, the review verifies that the content of the skill standards—made up of several elements—is still valid in today’s working environment. Industry representatives participate in the review to ensure that the contents of the standards represent the skills needed of entry-level technicians in the field.
