TSSB Extends its Recognition of National Institute of Metalworking Skills’ Machining I and II Skill Standards

October, 2009 - On October 20, 2009, the Texas Skill Standards Board extended its conditional recognition of National Institute of Metalworking Skills (NIMS) Machining I and II skill standards.

These national skill standards were originally developed by the National Tooling and Machining Association with the cooperation of seven other trade organizations and three organized labor institutions. The standards are maintained by NIMS and approved by the American National Standard Institute (ANSI). The TSSB originally recognized the skill standards at its November 9, 2004 meeting.

TSSB policy states that recognized skill standards must be reviewed and, if necessary, updated every five years at a minimum. NIMS submitted a letter to the TSSB requesting extension of their standards’ recognition, describing continual use and review of the skill standards by industry and educators. This industry scrutiny serves as an ongoing source of review and update and shows a continuing high level of relevance and content validity, which are the objectives of the TSSB’s five-year review and update policy.

The TSSB granted NIMS’s request for extension given the ongoing and active national acceptance of the NIMS skill standards by industry and educators.

The TSSB recognized the skill standards in accordance with its Guidelines for the Development, Recognition, and Usage of Skill Standards (October 2006). For more information, please contact the TSSB at (512) 936-8100.
