TSSB
Recognizes Logistics Management Program at
Lone Star College Cy-Fair
October, 2009 -
The Texas Skill Standards Board (TSSB) granted
Program Recognition to the Logistics
Management Associate of Applied Science (AAS)
Degree at Lone Star College Cy- Fair. The
program was recognized as being integrated
with the national, industry-defined
Manufacturing Logistics and Inventory Control
skill standards.
The skill standards enhanced program, which
was endorsed by its industry advisory
committee, will benefit both employers and
graduates. Graduates will gain the work
competencies—skills and
knowledge—that employers have agreed are
required for success across all manufacturing
industries. Employers in turn will gain a more
qualified workforce.
The Manufacturing Logistics and Inventory
Control skill standards define the common
knowledge, skills, and abilities that are
required for front-line workers in
manufacturing industries such as primary and
fabricated metals, computers and electronic
products, transportation equipment, machinery,
plastics and rubber production, petroleum and
coal products, food and beverage, etc. The
skill standards were developed and validated
over a two- year period by more than 4,000
front-line workers and first-line supervisors
from 700 companies. The standards may be
viewed on the TSSB website at www.tssb.org. The
Manufacturing Skill Standards Council (MSSC),
a collaboration of manufacturing companies,
trade associations, industrial unions,
professional societies, education and training
organizations, government and other
representatives, facilitated the development
and validation process.
Lead Business Faculty Member and Professor of
Logistics Ruben Howard was responsible for
integrating the skill standards into the
Logistics Management AAS Degree program, with
assistance from Anne Albarelli, Dean of
Business, Education, and Transitional Studies,
for which the college received a $5,000 Skill
Standards-Based Curriculum Development
Incentive Project award. The award was
administered by Del Mar College out of Perkins
State Leadership funds from the Texas Higher
Education Coordinating Board.
The Lone Star College Cy-Fair staff took
advantage of TSSB resources to integrate the
skill standards into the curriculum. They
followed the TSSB’s recommended six-step
process in the guidance document, A
User’s Guide: Incorporating Skill
Standards into Community and Technical College
Curriculum, which is available for
download from this web site. They also
received technical assistance from TSSB staff,
provided on-site at the college.
Examples of the Program Recognition
application materials submitted by Lone Star
College Cy- Fair for TSSB Recognition are
available in the Community and Technical
Colleges and Employers and Industry Groups
sections of this website.
